TR:AURANT: Label: Lactosum, B.P. / (Sugar of Milk) / Felton, Grimwade & Duerdins Pty. Ltd., Melbourne. Base Mark: Ground Pontil. Original tin cap. (Victoria). Medicine. Chemist. Applied, rolled lip. Painted label. Dark purple/magenta. Ground Pontil. 1 Gallon. Original tin cap. 295 mm. 1860s
Excellent. (8). Inner contents residue staining, in fact, inner contents remain in the lower portion! Some dust and grime which will clean off. Usage wear under heel. Some scratches scattered around. Painted label is original, it has the typical age crazing to it. Smaller Melbourne paper labels to front and rear I am reasonably sure are also original, but from a later use of this jar! Obviously they list different contents, but the contents sure do look like Sugar of Milk as listed on these labels, and this company was more from the 1930s, so would suggest this much earlier jar was used by this pharmacy in the 1930s as well - these types of items are known to have been used for decades at long running pharmacies, hence they are not often seen for sale. A great item, the front paper label is quite discoloured and stained, but fully legible - the rear label is less discoloured. Tin lid is original too, has some discolouration and a dint or two but is pretty good otherwise. One of two different examples in this auction from the same pharmacy, don't miss this opportunity! Estimate: $200-300
